HOMEPAGE JULY 2016

Tim Reynish

Dear colleagues,

Greetings from a typical English summer’s day. It’s time to watch the rain and think about repertoire, and I have just purchased the latest edition of what is probably the most important reference book in my wind music library. An initial browse through has stimulated my interest in several forgotten works, and several composers new to me.

I am delighted that so many conductors and administrators are browsing through this website, primarily to look at articles on conducting, directing and score study, but I believe that selecting repertoire is our most important job, and this month I have reviewed this book and discussed several of the rich vein of entries. Good exploring and listening!

TORSTEIN AAGAARD-NILSEN music for wind band

Tim Reynish June 2016

Back in 2003, one of my favorite works in the Jönköping WASBE Conference was Cantilena by Torstein Aagaard-Nilsen, and I am delighted that his name is the first entry in Felix Hauswirth’s 8th edition of 1000 Selected Works, Arctic Landscape. I am extremely remiss in not listening to more of his music and writing about a very important Norwegian composer, sadly more appreciated by our brass band colleagues than in wind band circles.
