HOMEPAGE AUGUST 2016

DISCOVERY OF THE MONTH

TWO HOLOCAUST COMPOSERS

AT LEAST TWO SIGNIFICANT MASTERPIECES

Many thanks to Dr. Troy Bennefield of Washington State University who writes:

I wanted to share with you that I’m working on an engraved edition of the unpublished divertimento for wind quintet by Dutch composer Dick Kattenburg, as well as some wind pieces (performed once at an event, never published) of his countryman Leo Smit…both killed in the holocaust. I’ll keep you updated on the progress!

The result so far is at least two great works to add to the repertoire – browse below for performances on Youtube.

There is a statistic counter attached to my web, and while it never identifies any browsers who log on, it does often identify their interests; the pages on directing techniques, score study, improving the sound, warm ups and performance practice have been visited well over a thousand times since May. But now Glenn Price in a superb two manual book on The Eloquent Conductor, Basic to Advanced Techniques makes my poor efforts seem almost ineffectual and redundant.

AMERICANS IN GREECE

A letter from Dr Tom Duffy, conductor of the Yale University Concert Band:

Dear Tim,

The Yale University Concert Band just played Dances from Crete for Syrian and Afghan refugees in a displaced persons camp in Athens, Greece. This fine music lit up children and adults who have little else of beauty in their daily lives. Thanks for commissioning a great and powerful piece of music.

Cheers, Tom Duffy
