WASBE Reviewed Feb 2008
WASBE and its British equivalent, BASBWE were founded in Manchester at the Royal Northern College of Music in 1981. Since then, both organisations through their publications and conferences have heightened international awareness of the enormous activity in the field of wind ensemble and brought a new repertoire into the public arena. A great deal of the WASBE Website is available for perusal by non-members; there you will also find information about the forthcoming Cincinatti Conference in 2009, and how to join the Association and reap the full benefits of membership. WHY JOIN WASBE? The answer is simple. WASBE is the only organization of its kind in the world, where conductors, composers, players, researchers and historians from all sides of the music profession -- universities, conservatoires, colleges, schools, the military, amateur and professional groups -- from over fifty different countries join together to further the art of music, albeit a specialist genre. Why do we need to? The answer is twofold. One the one hand, we are actively engaged in creating a new vital repertoire for our age in the host of commissions world-wide. On the other, the wind literature of the last two hundred and fifty years provides us with one of the most exciting of all repertoires, but it suffers from the greatest ignorance from our colleagues in the “music profession”, an ignorance which fuels prejudice.
