Welcome to my website and a Happy New Year for the Year of the Rat which starts on February 7^th. A Rat Year is a time of hard work, activity, and renewal, and it is apparently a good year to begin a new job, get married, launch a product or make a fresh start. 

Among those born in the Year of the Rat are Shakespeare, Marlon Brando, Clark Gable, Charlton Heston, Sean Penn, George Washington, Jimmy Carter, Richard Nixon, Al Gore and George Bush.

The Rat is the first sign of the Chinese zodiac and signifies new beginnings. This year is thus an appropriate time to start new ventures, especially groundbreakings. This includes new ideas, directions, and ways of doing things. It is a time to experiment and put plans into action, as there will be plenty of opportunities to achieve success. Something to consider is that which is begun now is likely to have long term consequences, so choose wisely to enrich your life.

My personal take on the repertoire revolution since 1981 has been revised in the light of the conferences and publications of the past couple of years. You will find ideas here on repertoire at all levels. Many thanks to webmaster Michael Grieff for posting this huge file.

OLIVIER MESSIAEN

I first came across the music of Olivier Messiaen when I got the players together and played in the first professional performance of Et Exspecto Resurectionem Mortuorum  at the Bromsgrove Festival, conducted by Harold Taylor. I was fortune enough to meet him while traveling on an Arts Council scholarship and shared his score of Turangalila at a rehearsal in Rotterdam. This year I look forward to the opportunity of conducting two performances of Et Exspecto with the RNCM wind Ensemble at the College on 1^st July and at Tewkesbury Abbey in the Cheltenham Festival on 7^th July.  His works for wind ensemble stretch over thirty two years, and we often overlook the two works of the eighties in our programming.

5 - CANFORD SUMMER SCHOOL OF MUSIC CONDUCTING COURSE

You can access information about the BASBWE Canford International conducting course and the Canford Wind Ensemble course by going to BASBWE and following the links to information about this year’s course

The course is for wind band conductors at the intermediate and advanced levels.  . Lists A and B are for the experienced student whilst list B is for the less experienced student. Observers are also encouraged and will be fully involved in general technique sessions, discussions and playing in the class ensemble, but they will only conduct at the discretion of the tutors.

The class will explore conducting techniques, score preparation, rehearsal and training skills. A CD and score library will be available for reference and special emphasis will be placed on extending the knowledge of repertoire at all levels. A DVD recorder will be used to analyse technical requirements and development and all participants will have the opportunity to continually review their work during the course, and to take away a DVD at the end of the week. The course will run concurrently with the Symphonic Wind Orchestra and there will be close liaison between the two. All participants should bring with them any instruments they play, in order to accommodate ensemble work within the class. (If for any reason you unable to bring your instrument(s), please let the summer school office know when you enroll.)

Obtaining Scores

Links have been provided to the publishers, many of whom have efficient online ordering systems. Just Music is a sheet music retailer specialising in wind music and should be able to obtain all of these items, even if not listed in their online catalogue. The Maecenas site does not have an online ordering facility but they deal very quickly with email and telephone orders. The Kozhevnikov is probably obtained most easily from JW Pepper - enter 2329399 as the catalog# on their site. The Schirmer site will inform you that the Schoenberg is hire only, but you can purchase it from JW Pepper, catalog# 7390669.

 JUNE 16 - 21 UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT AUSTIN

Registration for the Art of Band Conducting and Rehearsing Workshop at The University of Texas at Austin will open Friday, February 1st.  This year`s workshop will take place June 16-21 and will feature clinicians Kevin Sedatole, Richard Floyd, Robert Carnochan, and Jerry Junkin.

July 13 – 18 UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI-KANSAS CITY

Under the direction of Steve Davis, with Craig Kirchoff, Daniel Schmidt and Joe Parisi. The symposium will include these subject areas: pedagogy, literature, philosophy, psychology, preparation, score study, gesture, marching band topics, specific instrument pedagogy (from the podium) and rehearsal techniques, each of which will be presented by leaders in the field. The symposium is for both middle and high school music educators and college or university faculty.

July 21 – 26  FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY

Registration for the 2008 Florida International University Wind Conducting Symposium is now open. The dates are July 21-25. Clinicians are Roby George, Michael Haithcock, Director of Bands at Michigan and Matt Farquhar of the United State Marine Corps. Techniques of conducting new music and the art of the march will be our focus, along with the traditional repertoire. 

JULY 5 – 13 THE 2008 WORLD WIND ORCHESTRA PROJECT (WYWOP) will be held July 5th - 13th as part of the Mid Europe festival in Schladming, Austria. This is an International Wind Ensemble open to anyone age 15-30. Guest conductors include Kevin Sedatole (USA), Felix Hauswirth (CH), and Johann Mösenbichler (A). BEST RESEARCH IN RECORDED CLASSICAL MUSIC

"The Association for Recorded Sound Collections (ARSC) is pleased to announce the finalists for the 2007 ARSC Awards for Excellence in Historical Recorded Sound Research." (The press release can be found at http://www.arsc-audio.org/2007af.html.)

Among the six discography nominations in the category of BEST RESEARCH IN RECORDED CLASSICAL MUSIC is Lawrence Stoffel's A Discography of Concert Band Recordings on Compact Disc: Promoting the Artistry of Band Composition (Edwin Mellen Press), published 2006.

This study comprises two major components – (1) an annotated discography of 73 concert band/wind ensemble compositions, and (2) interviews with leading conductors who have recorded concert band music on audio compact discs. A complete annotation for each recording identified provides thorough catalog information, including contents, performer, producer, and date. Only recordings that are readily available to consumers are included in this catalog. The discography lists a total of 342 albums. The subjects of the interviews are four conductors who were selected for having produced many recordings of concert band music.

DEREK BOURGEOIS  One of his most popular orchestral works was his Wine Symphony (No 4), now arranged for wind orchestra and shortly to be recorded by the Belgian Guides.  His Symphony No 41 is subtitled "Sinfonia Andalucía" and weighs in at 77 minutes (8 movements, one for each region). He wrote it simultaneously in Orchestral and Wind Band versions.  It is scored for a normal big wind band, but also includes a solo guitar part in every movement.

Actually I didn't use the whole story of The Book of Urizen. I'm planning to compose a new composition called 'The Web', which will tell the last part of it.

MARK CAMPHOUSE writes about his latest work for brass, Legacy, which celebrates the life of the late Vincent Cichowicz.

Although Vince was very fond of works by Russian and French (and even some American!) composers, his musical training and distinguished 23-year career as a member of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra clearly had especially strong ties with  performance and stylistic characteristics associated with the great Austro-Germanic orchestral traditions. Accordingly, the three composers whose thematic material I chose to incorporate in Legacy reflect those traditions.  They are:  Johann Ernst Altenburg (1734-1801) Concerto for 7 Trumpets and Timpani; Anton Bruckner (1824-1896) Symphony No. 4 (“Romantic”) and Richard Strauss (1864-1949) Ein Heldenleben, op. 40

I chose the Altenburg, Concerto because it was the only work I ever performed under Vince as a conductor. I chose the Bruckner, Symphony No. 4 as it was programmed on what was to be among the last CSO concerts I remember attending (in March 1973 under guest conductor Rafael Kubelik) with Vince as a regular member of the trumpet section. And, if my recollections are correct of a lecture given by Vince in his marvelous D-51 Brass Pedagogy & Performance Class during my senior year at Northwestern, I chose the Strauss, Ein Heldenleben as Vince was so justifiably proud of his superb performance of the First Trumpet in E-Flat part on the historic March 1954 recording of that work with the CSO under Fritz Reiner. Some of the most prominent solo trumpet passages in Legacy have been assigned (symbolically) to the second trumpet part.  Has there ever been a finer, more intelligent, and musically responsive individual to occupy the position of second trumpet in any major professional American symphony orchestra than Vince Cichowicz?  I think not!

Legacy is a single movement work for large brass-percussion ensemble.  With a duration of approximately seven and a half minutes, the work is scored for 4 trumpets, 4 horns, 4 trombones, euphonium, tuba, timpani, and three percussionists.   

JOE TURRIN’s opera The Scarecrow  with wind accompaniment was featured on the front cover of the Winter 2007 issue of Opera America magazine.

The premiere of a new work by Joseph Turrin, The Fir Tree, based on a Hans Christian Andersen fairy-tale and adapted by Gloria Nissenson, was given by the New York Philharmonic Brass at Avery Fisher Hall on December 9^th., conducted by Joseph Turrin with narration by Bob McGrath from Sesame Street and Grammy Award winner vocalist Annette Sanders. The work is scored for narrator, vocalist, double brass quintet, and 3 percussion.  www.josephturrin.com

KENNETH HESKETH’s Vranjanka was played by North Texas conducted by Eugene Miraglio Corporon in November.

TIMOTHY JACKSON’s Passsacaglia was featured at the Florida Music Educator’s Association Convention played by Southern Winds, conducted by Bobby Adams who is also programming it with Stetson University Band and Volusia All-County Band. It was played in November at University of Louisville and will be programmed this Spring at University of Nevada at Las Vegas, Philharmonic Winds at Singapore and at Chethams School in Mancheste.

The world premiere of the Concertante for Euphonium and Wind by Terry Treherne will be given by Charley Brighton with the City of London Winds,  conducted by John Andrews, at St. Paul’s Covent Garden on the 10th. February

Chris Marshall’s new piano concerto, Renascence, is scheduled for two performasnces, Pacific Symphonic Wind Ensemble conducted by Marc Crompton on February 23^rd and University of Toronto Wind Ensemble on March 28^th.

ROYAL ENGINEERS BAND

Sam Becker’s latest work for wind is a Suite of 4 movements premiered by the Band of the Royal Engineers earlier this season - Fanfare Prelude; March; Lento; Presto.  It can be played all together or each movement could stand alone. Information from Sam Becker at sam@samuelbecker.net

Fanfares & celebrations was written and commissioned by the Royal Military School of Music, Kneller Hall to celebrate the school’s 150^th anniversary.

It is written in three movements. I. Intrada, II. Processionnal, III. Jubilate.

All three movements are held together by the opening unison fanfare on the brass. I have used many quotations and half quotations throughout the work to represent the R.M.S.M’s history; some are obvious, like the world famous tune to `British Grenadiers’ which I have used to represent the British Army, and some are less so! I also use fragments from the folk tune `Blow Away the Morning Dew’ which is the R.M.S.M march.

I have written Intrada in the style of a short overture that is heroic in flavour. On occasions there are interruptions and references to `God Save the Queen’, reminding us of the cacophony at Scutari. Towards the later half of this movement I have arranged `British Grenadiers’ which is eventually played at the same time and in competition with my opening fanfare.

Processional is a slow and stately dance that pays tribute to Sir Malcolm Arnold, who died as I started writing this movement. Sir Malcolm wrote a number of pieces dedicated to R.M.S.M including his `H.R.H The Duke of Cambridge March’, which was composed for the centenary of the R.M.S.M. Embedded in to `Processional’ are the famous `Westminster Chimes’ signifying the Corps of Army Music’s involvement in British state occasions including the `state opening of parliament’. Before the movement ends, listen out for a well known foreign tune that has sneaked in to the background! I bring the movement to a close with a short extract from the `last post’ quietly heralded by muted brass.

Jubilate is the final movement of my musical celebration. After a loud and furious percussion display a jocular variation of the opening fanfare is heard.  `Fanfares & CELEBRATIONS’ finally reaches its climax with a potpourri of British Army bugle calls that include `Retreat & Sunset’, `Royal Salute’, `Fall In’, `Men’s Meal’, `Band’, and `Salutes for Royalty/Viceroy’. This musical collage leads to the final rendition of my original fanfare which brings the work to its triumphant, optimistic close.

 The premiere was given by the Corps of Army Music made up of representatives of the Regimental Band of Her Majesty’s Grenadier Guards, the Band and Bugles of the Rifles and the Band of the Royal Signals conducted by Lt.Col Stephen Smith, Principal Director of Music Army, at Kneller Hall on 1 August 2007

Randy writes:

I commissioned Bernard in 1996-97 and he wrote a marvelous piece that you should consider – Music for a Medieval (K)Night.  It is three movements and is quite a whirlwind of Dutch stuff.  Although Bernard has not stated it this way, I feel the piece is a modern Dutch equivalent to the Holst or Milhaud Suites.  That might be an overstatement, but I’ll make it anyway.  It is uncharacteristically tonal for Bernard and is based on several old Dutch melodies.  The second movement is a very beautiful and personal conversation between solo flute, clarinet and alto sax (hmmm…might not be alto sax – it’s been a while!)

Messiaen - Waespi - Gossec - Catel – Jadin

Olivier Messiaen's epochal work "Et exspecto resurrectionem mortiorum" from 1964 for symphonic winds was inspired by a series of bible fragments and images of mexican, aegyptian and western sacred buildings. In a similar way, the work "Temples", composed in 2006 by the Swiss composer Oliver Waespi, relates to passages of the biblical Book of Ecclesiastes and to four temples of the Cambodian site of Angkor. Both works are performed alternately with works from the french revolutionary period by Gossec, Catel and Jadin,  on Saturday, 19 january 2008, at 8 p.m. at the Jesuitenkirche Luzern

10 - A COMMISSIONING PROJECT FOR THE 21^ST CENTURY

The first of a series of new repertoire articles for 2008

Dr. William Patrick Reynish, Born 24^th December 1966, Died 13^th May 2001

William Reynish, our third son, died in Spring 2001, climbing one Sunday morning in the Pyrenees. He was 34, a little younger than Mozart, and had packed into those years an enormous amount of travel, adventure and music; his son, Felix, now seven, shows every sign of following in his father’s footsteps.

His death came at a time when I had commissioned a work from Matthew Taylor for the Royal Northern College of Music Wind Ensemble; the College preferred not to pay the commissioning fee, so my wife Hilary and I turned it into a memorial piece for William and paid for it ourselves. Blasket Dances, one of the most atmospheric of our commissions, was premiered in my last concert as a member of staff at the RNCM in June 2001.

This was the start of a seven year commissioning project, still in progress, untramelled by committee meetings, consultations, form- filling and applications to Trusts, Arts Councils and Consortia,  producing twenty works at all levels, ranging from Blackwater and Song of Lir at Grade 3, to Cloud of Unknowing and Waves and Refrains for  professional or advanced college and conservatoire groups.

Many of the works celebrate his life and gusto; recently conducting Adam Gorb’s energetic ,spirited and optimistic Dances from Crete with Grand Island High School Concert Band, a mother of a student  who had also lost a child, came up to say how proud she felt William would be of their performance. Some of the works are elegiac and touching, none more so than Stephen McNeff’s Image in Stone a setting of four poems for mezzo soprano and wind ensemble, or Edwin Roxburgh’s Elegy for Ur, an extraordinary oboe concerto which comments on the horrors of the Iraqi war.  Fergal Carroll’s two works are already being played by school bands world wide, and Tim Jackson’s masterly Passacaglia is rapidly joining them. Adam Gorb’s Dances from Crete Fergal Carroll’s Song of Lir and Blackwater, Kenneth Hesketh’s Vranjanka and Christopher Marshall’s L’Homme Arme have already been recorded and the whole project has been the subject of a dissertation by Dr. Isaiah Odajima of Michigan State University - many thanks to him for all of his work.

I know that these commissions are already making a difference to programming world- wide, many thanks to all of the ensembles, composers and publishers involved. I take this opportunity to dedicate the series to my family, and especially to the memory of William.
