TIM REYNISH WEBSITE SUMMER 2007
Spring or Autumn greetings. I hope that those in the Southern hemisphere are having a great academic year, and that those in the North will have a great summer break. There is so much happening in the world of wind ensemble at present that I am overwhelmed with information and have found it almost impossible to write anything coherent for this homepage. However thanks to my webmaster, on average we attract over 200 hits a day, and I then receive queries and suggestions from round the world on a wide variety of topics, so below are my enthusiasms, recommendations and grumbles for early summer, especially for patient regular readers. If you have a question, review, news or whatever, please write to me at timreynish@tiscali.co.uk and I will try to respond. I do get many enquiries about what repertoire I would recommend. To discover my top tips, browse the Homepages for the last couple of years, look at the music included on my four Repertoire CDs published by Mark Custom or visit the repertoire lists for the Canford Conducting School. SPANISH MUSIC Linked to this homepage, you will find information about a wonderful new piece, Marco Polo, by Alarcón with great use of ethnic instruments, and a few links to information about Spanish music. I will be talking about this work and many other exciting new scores at the BASBWE and WASBE Conferences in June and July. For the moment, some of what I think to be significant repertoire at Grade 4 – 6 will probably be found in my listing of International repertoire and in the Canford Conducting course pages. Have a great summer, or winter……. And composers, try the current round of composers competitions. The two big events are of course the two major conferences. Look in on the websites of BASBWE and WASBE for a flavour of a host of exciting new works to be unveiled this summer. See you all there. Tim Reynish
REPERTOIRE IDEAS FOR NEXT SEASON NEW FILES IN COMPOSERS SECTION – ADAM GORB AND ALEC WILDER IN REPERTOIRE SECTION – SPANISH MUSIC BIRTHDAYS IN 2007 Alec Wilder born 1907 Elizabeth Maconchy born 1907 Willem van Otterloo born 1907 Guy Woolfenden born 1937 David Bedford born 1937 Martin Ellerby born 1957 BIRTHDAYS IN 2008 Adam Gorb born 1958 Marco Pütz born 1958 ALEC WILDER I am mortified at having ignored the centenary of one of my favourite musical characters and composers. The great Alec Wilder was the least self-promoting of all composers, so he would have not been at all surprised at our neglect of his music. However, I have written an introduction to an article by Tom Everett which might throw up some ideas. ELIZABETH MACONCHY & WILLEM VAN OTTERLOO This is just a note to remind us all of two great masterpieces of the ensemble literature, Music for Wind & Brass by Dame Elizabeth, scored for 2222:4331:T (Chester/Hansen/MusicSales) and van Otterloo’s magisterial Sinfonietta for 3333:4 (Donemus) COMPOSERS
FOR 2007 & 2008 I wrote briefly
about my Best Man, Guy Woolfenden, in the Homepage for January 2007 and you will
find a few lines about Guy, Martin and David and their contribution to the wind
orchestra repertoire in BWM 2 under BRITISH WIND MUSIC. ADAM GORB and
MARCO PÜTZ As you plan
your programmes or listening for next year,
you might like to browse the articles I have written on both of these
composers, listed under COMPOSERS

SYMPHONIC WIND ORCHESTRA Conductor Phillip Scott Assisted by Mark Heron and Tim Reynish The Symphonic Wind Orchestra is designed for experienced amateurs and students to play and study significant repertoire for Wind Orchestra and Wind Ensemble. A regular feature of the course will be chamber music as well as wind ensemble playing. Some of the repertoire will be studied in depth, the remainder in repertoire sessions. Reference should also be made to the repertoire listed for the BASBWE Wind Band Conductors' Course. Applicants are asked to note any 'doubling' instruments they play and can bring (Cor Anglais, Alto Clarinet etc.) on their application forms. SYMPHONIC WIND ORCHESTRA

BAND COMPOSITION COMPETITION We
have launched the 2007 CBDNA Young Band Composition Competition.
The project will culminate with the announcement of a winner at the 2007
Midwest Clinic CBDNA Forum on Friday afternoon, December 21. We are trying a
slightly different strategy for promoting the competition this year.
Rather than doing multiple mailings we have posted all information on our
website. At my request the American
Composers Forum is committed to the distribution of
details to its members via its website and June Newsletter.
With ACFs help the announcement will reach thousands of composers
nationwide. Please
take a minute to download a copy of the announcement and share it with your
composition professors and advanced composition students.
With your help it is my goal to
have at least 50 submissions this year. You
will find a link to the announcement and application on the CBDNA home page or
you can go directly to: http://www.cbdna.org/pdf/2007ybcc.pdf Musikverein,
Are we using the world wide web to its best advantage? Vienna, New York and Tokyo all saw premieres of significant wind works recently, but as far as I can discover trawling the websites, there has been little or no information about the works, the performances or their availability.

Frustrated of Leyland, The second half of the concert, featuring the Wind
Symphony conducted by Fred Speck began with Joan Tower's (b. 1938) Fascinating
Ribbons, followed by two works for antiphonal brass, played without pause, by
Krzystof Penderecki (b. 1933) and Toru Takemitsu (1930-1996). Karel Husa
returned to the program by way of a premiere of Cheetah, commissioned by the HALF A CENTURY The initiatives of Frederick Fennell over half a century ago led to two
developments, the first that composers could write with confidence for specific
forces, the second that standards of performance have improved dramatically.
Some thirty years later in the last century, in 1981, the CBDNA under the
leadership of Frank Barttisti hosted the first International Conference in
Manchester UK and founded WASBE. One result has been a massive increase of
original music at all levels, given a huge impetus by the development of
recordings through compact discs, and publishing through the computer music
programmes such as Finale and Sibelius. Curiously,
we have been slow to make full use of the incredible potential of the world wide
web, and many of us are still stuck in our own small limited world, be it
university, military or school (in no particular order), oblivious of the fact
that that there is a professional and semi-professional world of wind music out
there. As I write this, I am listening to an extraordinary disc by the Bläserphilharmonie
Mozarteum Salzburg, conducted by a fellow hornplayer Hansjörg Angerer Concerto for Double Bass, Wind, Harp & Percussion Ernst Leitner Concerto for Piano and Wind orchestra Hermann Regner Concertino for Viola, Wind & Percussion Helmut Eder Stories for Wind, Percussion and Double Bass Gerhard Wimberger UNIMOZ24 The
Philharmonic Winds of Salzburg are a mix of professors and students, a little
like the Philharmonic Winds of Saratov in TWO PROFESSIONAL DISCS FROM THE MILITARY Recently I was sent a disc by Michael Purton of the Royal Norwegian Navy Band playing the complete works of Holst in excellent performances, including the choral pieces from the 1911 Festival of Empire. Some excellent playing on these two discs (for the price of one) is allied to great presentation and fine sleeve notes by the Holst expert Lewis Forman, who discusses Holst’s Norwegian ancestors and also the fact that Holst’s part of the Festival was to illustrate the Viking raids on London. This is an excellent disc, especially for the research scholar, and it is part of Michael Purton’s firstrate series of recordings by British military bands on the @@@@@@@ label.
